We need your help!

Organizers of the Southern Lake Michigan Rim Project reached out to us and are asking for our help
in submitting bird data for eight public sites within the Grand Calumet Area of Concern.

Background: The Grand Calumet Area of Concern contains nearly 1,000 acres of remnant and
restored native habitat. The area faced heavy abuse and pollution from industrialization starting in the
1980s, but has been managed by entities such as Indiana DNR, Lake County Parks Department, and
The Nature Conservancy since 2015. In 2025, a grant from BP dedicated funds to these entities for
ecological restoration with the goal of improving biodiversity along the river (plants, insects, herps,
birds, etc.). Since most of the time by the crew members is focused on performing ecological
restoration in the field, they are reaching out to our organization for help collecting bird diversity data
for their sites.

Study Sites: There are eight sites in the Grand Calumet Area of Concern that are open to the public:
Seidner Dune and Swale, Grand Calumet Tern Site, Grand Calumet River Nature Preserve, Pine
Station, Ivanhoe Dune and Swale, Ivanhoe South, Roxana Marsh, and Gibson Woods. Most
preserves have paved trails, although some are lacking entirely. When trails are present, please stay
on them. Please be respectful and mindful of plants and wildlife while at preserves with no trail.
Download Detailed Site Information HERE.

Data collection will run through the fall of 2028, and all data beginning in January 2025 is
requested.

Submitting Data: All bird lists can be sent to Haley Weiland ([email protected]) with Alexis
Dalton ([email protected]) Cc’d. Please be sure to add the preserve’s name along with
your first and last name to the message.

Questions: If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected], and we will
answer them.
