Marquette Park Shorebird Project was initially conceived by Past DCAS President Matt Beatty as an Indiana response to the "Share Our Shore" initiatives at Waukegan, IL where Piping Plovers were observed and the successful nesting and conservation at Montrose Beach, Chicago. National Audubon Society awarded Dunes-Calumet Audubon a grant in early 2020 to implement a coastal stewardship program and conservation outreach at Miller Beach and Marquette Park Beach.
The Marquette Park Shorebird Project aims to increase the visibility, reach, and impact of Dunes-Calumet Audubon. We hope to mobilize chapter members to become more active conservationists and interested in chapter leadership. A Project Coordinator, currently Sammi King, will facilitate partnerships, training, and engagement. Volunteers will assist with shorebird observations, beach monitoring, and beach-friendly education.
